A NEMA 4 enclosure can be found in almost any industry around the world. The National Electrical
Manufacturers Association has established the rating system in order to provide the proper guidelines
for the encasement of electrical systems that need protection from external corrosives. The ratings
are based on a number system where the higher numbers indicate a higher degree of protection the
enclosure must have. In non-hazardous locations, there are several different NEMA ratings for
specific enclosure "types", their applications, and the environmental conditions they are designed
to protect against, when completely and properly installed.
A NEMA 4 enclosure must be constructed for either indoor or outdoor use to provide a degree of
protection to personnel against incidental contact with the enclosed equipment. It has to provide
a degree of protection against falling dirt, rain, sleet, snow, windblown dust, splashing water,
and hose-directed water; and will be undamaged by the external formation of ice on the enclosure.
The use of the non metallic NEMA 4 enclosure offers many different advantages to the user. It is much
less costly than steel or aluminum and does not corrode.
They are easier to install and can be adapted to fit many different applications. Corrosion is minimal if at all existent and the longevity of the
materials long outlasts its heavier more cumbersome counterparts. The most influential characteristic
in choosing a non metallic NEMA 4 enclosure over a metallic product is the environment that it will
be used. Where the product will be used and what it will be used for basically.
Stahlin products more than fulfill the requirements for a NEMA 4 enclosure. With over 40 years of
experience behind their electrical system enclosure solutions they service industries internationally
with products that meet and exceed user specifications. The ability to choose from over fifteen
different product families to solve needs from the ordinary to the most problematic.
If they do not have a product to fit your needs than they offer programs that will help find solutions. The
ModRight and FormRight programs offer services to engineers and designers that help them solve
their enclosure dilemmas. Installation is always a factor as well so some consideration must be
taken when choosing enclosures. The equipment mounting panel, wiring connections, enclosure
mounting, and of course grounding have to be taken into account. Stahlin's non metallic enclosures
have proven time and time again their products are superior in performance and price.
