Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures meets Commerce Controls’ needs for customized panels, corrosion prevention, and cost effectiveness in water treatment plant project.
    The engineering team needed customized panels that are non-corrosive but still cost effective. The challenge for enclosure manufacturers was the team's need for more than 40 enclosure cutouts for pilot lights, selector switches, pushbuttons, and displays.

    Stahlin customized the panels to meet Commerce Controls’ needs. They cut cost effectively by modifying the enclosure with 40 cutouts for pilot lights, selector switches, pushbuttons, and displays. Stahlin fabricated the panels with the other cutouts, saving Commerce Controls’ shop an enormous amount of time.

The Aqua Sentinel is an automatic analyzer designed for unattended on-line monitoring of nutrients and other chemicals in water treatment, process control, effluent discharge, intake metering and aqua culture applications.
    Stainless steel enclosures presented an option to aluminum, but their higher cost was something EnviroTech was unwilling to pass along to their customers. Interestingly, one of those customers had been using a non-metallic enclosure from Stahlin for another controls system they were protecting in extreme conditions. Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures and other local Michigan companies help the city of Belding achieve an improved lighting system.
With the overall project in the very capable hands of engineering firm Fleis & Vanderbrink Engineering, Inc., and the electrical installation overseen by the experienced team at Airport Lighting, the next challenge was selecting the proper electrical enclosures to protect the electrical connections and wiring used to achieve the desired lighting results.
    Fortunately, the engineers on the project knew that composite fiberglass materials might offer significant advantage over metallic alternatives. Specifically, composites have improved flexural strength because they can withstand an impact without permanent deformation or denting. Composite fiberglass also offers an effective continuous service temperature ranges from -76°F to +274°F, meaning that enclosures molded from this material will withstand even the most difficult operating environments.

    Plus, fiberglass composite materials can be superior to metallics --- even stainless steel in specific environments --- for the purpose of beating the high cost of damage from corrosion. Lastly, the weight of fiberglass would be less than metal, making the overall installation easier and less costly.

    Consequently, the decision was made to go with non-metallic enclosures for the job. As luck would have it, Stahlin Non- Metallic Enclosures is located in Belding, Michigan! At this point in the project, Fleis & Vanderbrink Engineering was able to contribute through its knowledge of enclosures manufactured by Stahlin and also of Stahlin’s ModRight™ Program --- an in-house service that offers the capability of producing a unique custom design through a hand lay-up process. Stahlin offers years of experience building large custom enclosures and, as a result, they understood immediately what was required. Fleis & Vanderbrink Engineering provided the necessary specs to Stahlin’s engineering team, enabling Stahlin to quickly expedite the customized order and deliver it to the City of Belding well within the required turnaround time. Plus, for this special project, Stahlin was able to produce the enclosures in a green color so they would blend into their new environment.

Stahlin non-metallic enclosure modifications contribute to a new outdoor emergency device with added functionality and increased reliability.
In addition to enabling the transmission of wireless signals, the enclosure housing the MS-6100 Emergency Help Station had to be able to handle the demands of an outdoor environment and be highly visible.
    They felt fiberglass would be a prime choice of materials. First, fiberglass would allow the transmission of wireless signals. Typically, an exposed metal enclosure would require an external antenna to ensure signals could be sent and received. The company’s systems are placed in extreme urban environments. They anticipated damage to antennas would compromise the functionality of the device, could pose a safety risk and create an ongoing maintenance and service issue.

    Their investigation of non-metallic enclosure sources was initially conducted online with support from Maria Lamorey, Market Development Manager with Stahlin Enclosures. Through this investigation, Metis determined that Stahlin’s Non-Metallic DS (DiamondShield®) Series would meet their needs. The Stahlin Diamondshield® Series was developed for design, flexibility, and pleasing aesthetics. Applications include high-end electronics, harsh corrosive environments, and industrial applications both indoors and out. Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures contributes to the Haiti Empowerment Project through Ohio State University’s Solar Energy Society.
An Ohio State University student group, Solar Education and Outreach, a student chapter of the American Solar Energy Society, initiated a sustainable project for Haiti after members had learned that one of Haiti's largest problems is the lack of electricity — specifically for lighting.
    Fiberglass J1614HW enclosures, from Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures, were chosen to house the solar panel controls because the J-Series provides a rugged design proven to hold extreme reliability in tough environments.

    Ohio State University and University Caribe students successfully installed four Trina 240 watt solar panels on the roof of a small school: Petit Agneau, with the PV system located in a separate administration office building.The power system was installed in the Stahlin Non-Metallic J1614HW enclosure with cables from the solar panels cables going directly to a charge controller. From there, the charge is regulated to the batteries, first going through a breaker. From the batteries, the charge returns to the charge controller where it is then fed to an inverter. The DC current then gets converted into AC for actual use in lighting.

Abita Brewery Case Study
"By nature, everything here is constantly being exposed to many elements"
    The Abita Brewing Co., founded in 1986, is located just north of New Orleans, LA, Abita is a rapidly growing brewery with specific manufacturing obstacles directly related to its aggressive environment.

    "By nature, everything here is constantly being exposed to many elements" states James Franklin, Abita's Plant Engineer.  All enclosures used are of NEMA 4X construction because of water, caustic, acid, and bleach that are regularly used during cleaning procedures.

    "Abita also, literally, has its own weather system. Because of the constant moisture in our facility, some days have actual clouds in the top half of the building. The result is that ferrous metal products corrode at a very high rate. The plant wide specification is to use non-metallic enclosures in all areas" adds Franklin.

    As a result of these environmental conditions, Abita has within the past 7 years used or replaced metal enclosures with more than 50 Stahlin fiberglass enclosures. "I t makes sense to use them up front and forget about it, Franklin said. Non-metallic enclosures cost less; in addition, they are lighter weight so we save on shipping. We are stating that on new equipment purchases, control panels are to be of non-metallic construction. We have had to replace metallic enclosures with finger size holes in them." Franklin also explained that a pry bar had to be used on an OEM metallic control enclosure to open it after the 3 point latch mechanism had become 'frozen'. This enclosure is currently scheduled for replacement.

    "This is a great proving ground for a lot of products, especially electrical enclosures. Although longevity and cost are key factors, I am also concerned with ease of workability. Stahlin performs factory modifications to our specs, but we also do a great deal of field modifications to accommodate distribution, starters, drives, and other automation. The enclosures are much easier to modify using conventional tools."

    Franklin concluded that "low cost, workability, durability, and performance make non-metallic enclosures for our environment a no brainer."

Stahlin enclosures used to protect controls in highly demanding environments
    Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures, manufacturer of the world's most frequently specified fiberglass electrical enclosure products, has been selected, by Monroe Truck Equipment, as a supplier of choice for enclosures used to protect controls in highly demanding environments.

    Monroe Truck Equipment is a manufacturer of roadway salt spreaders, Pre-Wet and Anti-Ice Systems, for melting ice on winter roadways. A load of salt is conveyed in the back of a truck and a small portion of salt is propelled across the roadway by a mechanical thrower to provide an even dusting of salt on packed ice and snow.

    Monroe chose Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures to provide safe, environmental protection for the distribution controls involved in these processes. Notable in the design was a need for a mechanically sound enclosure that protected itself and its contents from an ever-present state of water and salt exposure without the natural corroding effects common to metal enclosures. Mechanically sound is also a reference to an enclosure that could be exposed to flying stones and roadway objects without fear of breakage. The durability of Stahlin fiberglass products was ideal for this application. In total, five Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures, J1210HW, J1816HW, J604HLL, J1210HPL, and J1816HPL are used by Monroe.

Durability of non-metallic enclosure from Stahlin meets need for satellite communication use.
AMCi manufactures systems that utilize enclosures for the housing and protection of a variety of internal components.
    After reviewing the many available options AMCi opted to use non-metallic enclosures to protect their systems. Why? First, because metal is not as accommodating as non-metallic materials in terms of enabling electronic signals to transmit as freely as their satellite systems required. Second, because their systems are placed in extreme and remote environments. They did not want to risk needing to expose an antenna as would be necessary with a metallic enclosure. That would have made the entire system more vulnerable to failure. Third, they were convinced that non-metallic enclosures ultimately provided proven durability essential for protecting their applications.

The fundamental mission of the ASC is to promote and celebrate educational excellence.
    Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures will play an important role in the first American Solar Challenge race, scheduled this summer, July 15-25, spanning 2300 miles of Route 66 from Chicago, Illinois to Palm Springs, California.

    The American Solar Challenge (ASC) is an intercollegiate competition to design, build and race solar-powered cars. ASC recently acquired responsibilities for GM Sunrayce, previous solar races that have been run since the 1990's. The fundamental mission of the ASC is to promote and celebrate educational excellence. The event also contributes to America's awareness about renewable energy sources and technology; clean energy options; environmental protection; cost savings through energy efficiency; improvements in transportation; and creation of new, fast-growing, energy-related fields.

    North Dakota State University, one of 60 collegiate teams competing from the U.S. and worldwide, is participating under the name: Sunsetters - NDSU Solar Race Team. Sunsetters is comprised of more than 30 students from the fields of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, and Business.

    How do enclosures from Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures fit into the American Solar Challenge?

    Race regulations require Sunsetters to secure the batteries for their 6' wide x 17' long car, Prairie Fire, within an electrolyte resistant box. The enclosure must be able to contain acid leakage in the event of battery failure as well as to protect drivers and crew from high voltage. Lucas A. Graunke, Electrical Engineering Co-Head for Sunsetters - NDSU Solar Race Team, explains further. "I have been working for an electrical engineering company in the Twin Cities for the last 5 summers and have become familiar with Stahlin's non-metallic enclosures. I'm impressed with their quality and versatility and was very pleased when Stahlin agreed to sponsor our efforts. We worked out the specifications of the boxes and they got them built for us right away. Both enclosures were hand lay-up custom made to fit in the limited area we had set aside for them in our car's frame."

    The 8 batteries for Prairie Fire will be safely housed within two Stahlin fiberglass N-Series 34x12x11 enclosures, four batteries each. Prairie Fire will be powered by 610 solar cells providing roughly 900 watts of power (about equivalent to a blow dryer). 8, 12-volt deep cycle batteries wired in series to will provide 96 volts of power.

Stahlin non-metallic enclosures protect critical sensor systems.
Recently, Wavetronix was in need of an enclosure for their Click! line of devices to offer surge surpression, power, and communication options for serial to fiber, serial to Bluetooth, serial to Ethernet, serial to Wifi, serial to USB, and serial to 900 Mhz.
    Initially, Wavetronix was told by some resources the only enclosure type that could meet their needs was a metallic enclosure. Metallics, however, did not seem to meet some of their principle requirements for reduced weight and cost; nor did they appear to offer the breadth of protection against corrosive and other environmental forces likely to post a damage threat to the controls enclosures must protect.

    They sought the input of many professionals. Through their research they were able to understand the opportunities of composite non-metallic enclosures compared to more conventional metallic options.

    They learned, as well new technologies and formulations have provided non-metallic enclosures with exactly the attributes they had been seeking. They determined composite non-metallic enclosures are highly corrosion resistant and help beat the extremely high cost of environmental damage.     The Challenge: For almost 25 years, Paneltronics, Inc. has been considered the industry-leading manufacturer of high quality electrical power distribution panels and control systems. Paneltronic products are widely used in the marine industry and after years of helping these OEMs’ with the design, engineering and manufacturing of power distribution panels and systems, it became clear to our team that boat builders needed to make every effort to improve productivity and increase reliability by reducing installation labor hours and consolidating complex assembly and wiring into pre-packaged sub-assemblies.

    In one particular example, a marine OEM registered approximately 18 man hours to complete a complex assembly of multiple solenoids, relays, circuit breakers, and bus bars. In addition, this OEM often seemed overwhelmed by the amount of inventory they had to carry for these multiple components and the paper work associated to maintain the inventory. And if by chance they ever had to troubleshoot the complex assembly it seemed overwhelming for them to determine where the failure was actually located.

    The team at Paneltronics knew if we could somehow combine these multiple components and assemblies into one unit we would help reduce the overall cost for our OEM. The Paneltronics team set out to produce a product that would lower their cost.

How to effectively protect a SCADA control panel in a water/wastewater environment using Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures.
Although commonly found in disinfectants and bleach, chlorine is a well-known and vital chemical utilized in the process of water purification.
    FTC&H needed to find an enclosure that could house a PLC with local I/O rack/chassis, UPS, and relays inside the enclosure. They also needed space on the front panel to secure analog indicators, pushbuttons, pilot lights and selector switches. In addition, the client required a “double seal” to protect the contents of the enclosure from the affects of the corrosive environment. This certainly was not a simple order to fulfill, until a suggestion from one of FTC&H’s suppliers, FCI Automation, led them to Stahlin Non-Metallic Enclosures.
